How to Kickstart Your Leadership Journey
Published on April 1, 2023

Starting a leadership journey can be daunting and filled with uncertainty, and we understand. Don’t worry because your ahias and atsis here in YCSC will guide you along every step of the way! As an aspiring leader you have the opportunity to shape the world around you and to create changes that no one has witnessed before. Here are some points to consider to kickstart your leadership journey:
SETTING GOALS
Take a moment to think and write down about what you want to achieve in the next 5 years at most. They don’t have to be broad, and you can always start small. This idea is summed up in Laozi’s words, “千里之行,始于足下” (A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step). Your goals will guide you toward your set direction, and will help you keep track of your progress. Being a leader means you need to know what you and your team wants to achieve and how you can achieve it.
SELF-AWARENESS
List down your strengths and weaknesses, and communicate them with your trusted friends. Be modest in your capabilities, and be humble in your flaws. A leader should use feedback to improve and further their leadership abilities and understand that they are part of a team. No one goes through their leadership journey alone.
CONFIDENCE
Take up opportunities that boost your confidence. It might be something as simple as raising your hand in class, starting a conversation with someone, or joining social events. Confidence is key for a leader and must be portrayed to their team.
EMPATHY
Being a great leader means you understand how your team members feel, how the dynamic of your team is, and what leadership style works best for your team. You should be able to empathize with others, so that your team members feels comfortable and safe sharing their ideas to be able to maximize their potential. This creates a healthy space for you and your team to work in.
LIFELONG LEARNING
Always challenge yourself to learn new things, and see familiar things from different perspectives. There are never enough lessons to learn in developing yourself and broadening what you know about the world around you. Stay committed to your goals and values, and continue to work to improve yourself and those around you.
There’s no one right way to kickstart a leadership journey, but we hope that by following these steps, aspiring leaders like you can define their journey and start heading in the right direction.
Good luck, and we hope to see you in this year’s YCSC!
